Formatting Syntax

wiki:DokuWiki supports some simple markup language, which tries to make the datafiles to be as readable as possible. This page contains all possible syntax you may use when editing the pages. Simply have a look at the source of this page by pressing the Edit this page button at the top or bottom of the page. If you want to try something, just use the playground page. The simpler markup is easily accessible via quickbuttons, too.

Basic text formatting

DokuWiki supports bold, italic, underlined and monospaced texts. Of course you can combine all these.

You can use subscript and superscript, too.

Paragraphs are created from blank lines. If you want to force a newline without a paragraph, you can use two backslashes followed by a whitespace or the end of line.

This is some text with some linebreaks\\ Note that the
two backslashes are only recognized at the end of a line\or followed by\\ a whitespace \\this happens without it.

You should use forced newlines only if really needed.

Links

DokuWiki supports multiple ways of creating links.

External

External links are recognized automagically: http://www.google.com or simply www.google.com - You can set Linknames, too: This Link points to google. Email addresses like this one: andi@splitbrain.org are recognized, too.

addresses like this one: andi@splitbrain.org are recognized, too.

Internal

Internal links are created by using square brackets. You can either just give a wiki:pagename or use an additional Title Text. Wiki pagenames are converted to lowercase automatically, special characters are not allowed.

You can use wiki:namespaces by using a colon in the pagename.

You can use wiki:namespaces by using a colon in the pagename.

For details about namespaces see wiki:namespaces.

Linking to a specific section is possible, too. Just add the section name behind a hash character as known from HTML. This links to this Section.

This links to this Section.

Notes:

  • Links to existing pages are shown in a different style from wiki:nonexisting ones.
  • DokuWiki does not use CamelCase to automatically create links by default, but this behaviour can be enabled in the wiki:config file. Hint: If DokuWiki is a link, then it's enabled.
  • When a section's heading is changed, its bookmark changes, too. So don't rely on section linking too much.

Interwiki

DokuWiki supports Interwiki links. These are quick links to other Wikis. For example this is a link to Wikipedia's page about Wikis: Wiki.

For example this is a link to Wikipedia's page about Wikis: Wiki.

Windows Shares

Windows shares like [[\\server\share|this]] are recognized, too. Please note that these only make sense in a homogenous user group like a corporate Intranet.

Windows Shares like [[\\server\share|this]] are recognized, too.

Notes:

  • For security reasons direct browsing of windows shares only works in Microsoft Internet Explorer per default (and only in the "local zone").
  • For Mozilla and Firefox it can be enabled through the config option security.checkloaduri but this is not recommended.
  • See 151 for more info.

Image Links

You can also use an image to link to another internal or external page by combining the syntax for links and [[#images_and_other_files|images]] (see below) like this:

371

372

Please note: The image formatting is the only formatting syntax accepted in link names.

The whole [[#images_and_other_files|image]] and link syntax is supported (including image resizing, internal and external images and URLs and interwiki links).

Footnotes

You can add footnotes ((This is a footnote)) by using double parentheses.

You can add footnotes ((This is a footnote)) by using double parentheses.

Sectioning

You can use up to five different levels of headlines to structure your content. If you have more than three headlines, a table of contents is generated automatically -- this can be disabled by including the string <nowiki>~~NOTOC~~</nowiki> in the document.

Headline Level 3

Headline Level 4

==== Headline Level 3 ====
=== Headline Level 4 ===
== Headline Level 5 ==

By using four or more dashes, you can make a horizontal line:

Images and other files

You can include external and internal wiki:images with curly brackets. Optionally you can specify the size of them.

Real size: dokuwiki-128.png

Resize to given width: dokuwiki-128.png

dokuwiki-128.png |This is the caption

If you specify a filename (external or internal) that is not an image (gif, jpeg, png), then it will be displayed as a link instead.

For linking an image to another page see above.

Lists

Dokuwiki supports ordered and unordered lists. To create a list item, indent your text by two spaces and use a * for unordered lists or a - for ordered ones.

  • This is a list
  • The second item
    • You may have different levels
  • Another item
  1. The same list but ordered
  2. Another item
    1. Just use indention for deeper levels
  3. That's it

Smileys

DokuWiki converts commonly used emoticons to their graphical equivalents. More smileys can be placed in the smiley directory and configured in the conf/smileys.conf file. Here is an overview of Smileys included in DokuWiki.

Typography

DokuWiki can convert simple text characters to their typographically correct entities. Here is an example of recognized characters.

-> <- <-> => <= <=> >> << -- --- 640x480 (c) (tm) (r)
"He thought 'It's a man's world'..."

-> <- <-> => <= <=> >> << -- --- 640x480 (c) (tm) (r)
"He thought 'It's a man's world'..."

Please note: These conversions can be turned off through a config option and a pattern file.

Quoting

Some times you want to mark some text to show it's a reply or comment. You can use the following syntax:

I think we should do it

> No we shouldn't

>> Well, I say we should

> Really?

>> Yes!

>>> Then lets do it!

I think we should do it

No we shouldn't
Well, I say we should
Really?
Yes!
Then lets do it!

Tables

DokuWiki supports a simple syntax to create tables.

Heading 1 Heading 2 Heading 3
Row 1 Col 1 Row 1 Col 2 Row 1 Col 3
Row 2 Col 1 some colspan (note the double pipe)
Row 3 Col 1 Row 2 Col 2 Row 2 Col 3

Table rows have to start and end with a | for normal rows or a ^ for headers.

^ Heading 1 ^ Heading 2 ^ Heading 3 ^
| Row 1 Col 1 | Row 1 Col 2 | Row 1 Col 3 |
| Row 2 Col 1 | some colspan (note the double pipe) ||
| Row 3 Col 1 | Row 2 Col 2 | Row 2 Col 3 |

To connect cells horizontally, just make the next cell completely empty as shown above. Be sure to have always the same amount of cell separators!

Vertical tableheaders are possible, too.

Heading 1 Heading 2
Heading 3 Row 1 Col 2 Row 1 Col 3
Heading 4 no colspan this time
Heading 5 Row 2 Col 2 Row 2 Col 3

As you can see, it's the cell separator before a cell which decides about the formatting:

| ^ Heading 1 ^ Heading 2 ^
^ Heading 3 | Row 1 Col 2 | Row 1 Col 3 |
^ Heading 4 | no colspan this time | |
^ Heading 5 | Row 2 Col 2 | Row 2 Col 3 |

Note: Vertical spans (rowspan) are not possible.

You can align the table contents, too. Just add at least two whitespaces at the opposite end of your text: Add two spaces on the left to align right, two spaces on the right to align left and two spaces at least at both ends for centered text.

Table with alignment
right center left
left right center
xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx

This is how it looks in the source:

^ Table with alignment ^^^
| right| center |left |
|left | right| center |
| xxxxxxxxxxxx | xxxxxxxxxxxx | xxxxxxxxxxxx |

Non-parsed Blocks

You can include non-parsed blocks into your documents by either indenting them by at least two spaces (like used for the previous examples) or by using the tags code or file.

This is preformatted code all spaces are preserved: like <-this

<file>
This is pretty much the same, but you could use it to show that you quoted a file.
</file>

To let the parser ignore an area completely (ie. do no formatting on it), enclose the area either with nowiki tags or even simpler, with double percent signs <nowiki>%%</nowiki>.

This is some text which contains addresses like this: http://www.splitbrain.org and **formatting**, but nothing is done with it.

See the source of this page to see how to use these blocks.

Syntax Highlighting

DokuWiki can highlight sourcecode, which makes it easier to read. It uses the GeSHi Generic Syntax Highlighter -- so any language supported by GeSHi is supported. The syntax is the same like in the code block in the previous section, but this time the name of the used language is inserted inside the tag. Eg. <nowiki><code java></nowiki>.

/**
 * The HelloWorldApp class implements an application that
 * simply displays "Hello World!" to the standard output.
 */
class HelloWorldApp {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!"); //Display the string.
    }
}

The following language strings are currently recognized: actionscript-french, actionscript, ada, apache, applescript, asm, asp, autoit, bash, blitzbasic, bnf, caddcl, cadlisp, cfdg, cfm, c_mac, c, cpp, cpp-qt, csharp, css, delphi, diff, div, dos, d, eiffel, fortran, freebasic, gml, groovy, html, idl, ini, inno, io, java5, java, javascript, latex, lisp, lua, matlab, mirc, mpasm, mysql, nsis, objc, ocaml-brief, ocaml, oobas, oracle8, pascal, perl, php-brief, php, plsql, python, qbasic, rails, reg, robots, ruby, sas, scheme, sdlbasic, smalltalk, smarty, sql, tcl, text, thinbasic, tsql, vbnet, vb, vhdl, visualfoxpro, winbatch, xml, xpp, z80

RSS/ATOM Feed Aggregation

DokuWiki can integrate data from external XML feeds. For parsing the XML feeds, SimplePie is used. All formats understood by SimplePie can be used in DokuWiki as well. You can influence the rendering by multiple additional space separated parameters:

Parameter Description
any number will be used as maximum number items to show, defaults to 8
reverse display the last items in the feed first
author show item authors names
date show item dates
description show the item description. If [[doku>wiki:config#htmlok HTML]] is disabled all tags will be stripped
n[dhm] refresh period, where d=days, h=hours, m=minutes. (e.g. 12h = 12 hours).

The refresh period defaults to 4 hours. Any value below 10 minutes will be treated as 10 minutes. DokuWiki will generally try to supply a cached version of a page, obviously this is inappropriate when the page contains dynamic external content. The parameter tells DokuWiki to re-render the page if it is more than refresh period since the page was last rendered.

Example:

{{rss>http://slashdot.org/index.rss 5 author date 1h }}

{{rss>http://slashdot.org/index.rss 5 author date 1h }}

Embedding HTML and PHP

You can embed raw HTML or PHP code into your documents by using the html or php tags like this:

<html>
This is some <font color="red" size="+1">HTML</font>
</html>

<html>
This is some <font color="red" size="+1">HTML</font>
</html>

<php>
echo 'A logo generated by PHP:';
echo '<img src="' . $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?=' . php_logo_guid() . '" alt="PHP Logo !" />';
</php>

<php>
echo 'A logo generated by PHP:';
echo '<img src="' . $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?=' . php_logo_guid() . '" alt="PHP Logo !" />';
</php>

Please Note: HTML and PHP embedding is disabled by default in the configuration. If disabled, the code is displayed instead of executed.

Syntax Plugins

DokuWiki's syntax can be extended by Plugins. How the installed plugins are used is described on their appropriate description pages. The following syntax plugins are available in this particular DokuWiki installation:

We feed the world - un documentaire choc

We feed the world - un documentaire choc (12.04.07)

Quand l’Amazonie devient poulet

Plus polluée xZG, Sam Hoffmann (MS nanotech.)\\ xCH, Jacob PhD microbiologie\\ Loris Miorinni (BE, licence sociologie Unine)\\ Africain (Kola, PhD Math, Unine)

Africain, Kola, PhD Math, Unine

  • Terre plus polluée à moyen terme, moins polluée à long terme.

1) copy and paste content from old CMS to new CMS (mambo at http://www.onenew.org/2) to (Wordpress at http://www.onenew.org/wp). If possible, do it on the lower level, directly in the database.

  • Preserve images and documents.
  • Transfer any functionnalities, calendar, documents, links, images, etc.

ok, done, from 07-09 to 07-1231.

2) Use only Wordpress, Drupal or Dokuwiki. They are well programmed, work well, performant, popular.

  • Don't use Mambo or Joomla. They are popular but not so evolved or powerfull. No path depth greater than 2, impossible to publish in more than one category.
  • Investigate Mediawiki, Drupal. Compare the trends.

ok, done. Drupal is installed. It was choosen because of its robust and flexible categorization scheme.

3) Establish new taxonomy and classify content

  • Analyse old taxonomy, the terms and their meaning.
  • Establish new taxonomy based on fundamental robust concepts like Sciences and human knowledge. It is the essential point of the site, spend a lot of time on that.

=====Transfer 30 articles from DokuWiki to Drupal=====

=================================================

SOURCE
http://www.onenew.org/wiki/doku.php

DESTINATION
http://www.onenew.org/3/node/add/story

Goal: transfer all the content (articles) under Dokuwiki into Drupal, site version3. Use the dokuwiki syntax parser installed in Drupal or use a dokuwiki to Drupal converter.

Method: It is about 30 articles. Articles in Dokuwiki are stored in the form of text files. All files are stored in directories under wiki/data/ folder.

1) Simply go by FTP to
ftp://onenewor@onenew.org/public_html/wiki/data
and retrieve all the pages.

2) Create the exact copy of the categories in dokuwiki under Drupal. Look at the directories to see all categories.
ok, checked 2 times.

3) Open the Drupal "add node" form. Using the form, add a node of "story type", and enter manually all the articles (30). Select at the bottom of the form "input format" = pearwiki filter.

Do that for all articles.

4) Retrieve the files from Dokuwiki. Place them in a safe folder on the Drupal site.
Make the link between the articles and the files when needed, for pictures and documents.

5) Check that the content of all articles is correctly transfered. Points to check are:
- correct page layout 'mise en page', with titles, sub-titles, paragraph, lists, etc...
- correct parsing of web addresses and email addresses (if you click on them, you go to the target URL)
- correct display of images and linking
- correct display of documents (as an icon) and linking
- keep creation date if possible

Move profiles

Move an existing profile or restore a backed up profile

It's possible to move the location of a profile folder. This could be useful if you have a backed up profile folder somewhere on your hard drive and want to tell Thunderbird to use that as your profile. This section explains how to do this.

1. Shut down Thunderbird completely (File > Exit).
2. Move the profile folder to the desired location. For example, on Windows XP, move the profile from C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default to D:\Stuff\MyMailProfile. If you are reading these instructions because you want to restore a previously backed up profile, this step isn't necessary. Just note the current location of the profile you want to restore.
3. Open up profiles.ini in a text editor. The file is located in the application data folder for Thunderbird:
  • On Windows Vista/XP/2000, the path is %AppData%\Thunderbird * On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Thunderbird * On Linux, the path is ~/.thunderbird/
    • On Mac OS X, the path is ~/Library/Application Support/Thunderbird/

4. In profiles.ini, locate the entry for the profile you've just moved. Change the Path= line to the new location. If you are using a non-relative pathname, the direction of the slashes may be relevant (this is true for Windows XP).
5. Change IsRelative=1 to IsRelative=0.
6. Save profiles.ini and restart Thunderbird.

Method 1

Moving a Firefox or Thunderbird profile to a new location

Firefox or Thunderbird should already be installed on the computer where you are moving the profile and a profile folder and profiles.ini file will already exist in the Thunderbird or Firefox default profile path.

The official Help documentation at mozilla.org describes procedures for Thunderbird and for Firefox whereby you can move your profile to another location and then simply point Thunderbird or Firefox to it through a simple edit of the "profiles.ini" file. This is easier than Method 2, below, which requires somewhat more complex file editing. Some users have reported that the procedure sometimes does not work, however, and the failure may be caused by installed extensions and/or themes [1]. If you try this method and it doesn't work for you, see the Troubleshooting section below or try Method 2 or Method 3.

1. Create a new, empty folder in the desired profile location with the name you wish to use for the new profile, for example, D:\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\newprofile
2. Copy the entire contents of the Firefox or Thunderbird profile folder you are moving into the new profile folder you just created.
3. If you do the copy via a CD, remove the write-protection from the copied files.
4. Find the Firefox or Thunderbird profiles.ini file (it will be located in the Firefox or Thunderbird default profile folder path) and open it in a text editor.
  • (Optional) Change the "Name=" line to the name of the new profile folder you created, e.g., Name=newprofile
    • Change "IsRelative=1" to "IsRelative=0"
      • Change the "Path=" line to the actual location of the new profile folder, e.g., Path=D:\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\newprofile.

5. If you are moving a profile from its default location, the original profile folder can now be removed.
6. Open Firefox or Thunderbird, to test if the profile move was successful.

Caution: Incorrect editing of the "profiles.ini" file can cause a Firefox or Thunderbird "already running but is not responding" error if the profile cannot be found (bug 278860).

Instead of editing the "profiles.ini" file by hand after performing steps 1, 2 and 3, you could alternately use the Firefox or Thunderbird Profile Manager to create a new profile [2], using the "Choose folder" option to select the new profile folder. You can also use the Profile Manager again to delete the original profile (always use the "Don't Delete Files" option as a safety precaution when deleting profiles).

When you restart Thunderbird, go to "Tools -> Account Settings" and for each account (including Local Folders), click on "Server Settings" and verify that "Local directory" is pointed to the correct location. If it isn't, then click on the "Browse" button to fix it. You may need to exit and restart Thunderbird for these changes to take effect.

"Oil Smoke & Mirrors" offers a sobering critique of our perceived recent history, of our present global circumstances, and of our shared future in light of imminent, under-reported and mis-represented energy production constraints.

Through a series of impressively candid, informed and articulate interviews, this film argues that the bizzare events surrounding the 9/11 attacks, and the equally bizzare prosecution of the so-called "war on terror", can be more credibly understood in the wider context of an imminent and critical divergence between available global oil aupply and and global oil demand.

Divers sujets

Audio

Codec

AAC

The best codec for audio compression is MPEG-4 aacPlus v2, also called HE-AAC or simply AAC. It is extremely efficient for high quality audio and gives the best results among all codecs even at low bitrates. It uses SBR and PS to make a very good use of bandwith.
To rip a CD into AAC, it takes about 5 minutes and 20MB for a whole CD. AAC at 48 kbps is as good as mp3 at 128 kbps and as good as a CD.
To rip a CD and encode it in AAC, there are few good softwares:

  1. Easy CD-DA extractor: very rapid, parametrization, good interface
  2. Winamp: good, retrieve titles from internet DBgrace, but makes errors (my experience).
  3. Nero CD ripping, dbpoweramp, others (http://www.download.com/Audio-Video-Software/2001-2025_4-0.html?tag=dir)

Best codecs:

  1. aacPlus v2
  2. MP3pro
  3. OGG Vorbis
  4. MP3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HE-AAC

Summary from wikipedia
Perceived quality

It is sometimes claimed that a 48- or 64-kilobit per second|kbit/s HE-AAC stream, when decoded to audio, will produce similar quality output to MP3 at 128 kbit/s. HE-AAC generally outperforms other popular codecs on non time-critical audio materials light music in the 32–64 kbit/s range. Its main competition for delivering acceptable quality at these bitrates comes from MP3pro, which also employs SBR.

Decoders that do not support SBR will simply play back the LC-AAC part of the audio, generally resulting in significantly reduced quality, since it is typically half the sampling rate therefore the audio bandwidth.

== Support ==
HE-AAC is supported in the open source FAAD/FAAD2 decoding library (and all players incorporating it), Winamp, foobar2000, and Sony's latest SonicStage version 4.

HE-AAC is also used by AOL Radio clients to deliver high-fidelity music at low bitrates.

As of 2007, neither iTunes, nor iPod supports HE-AAC. Only MPEG 2 AAC (MPEG 2 Audio - part 3) is supported so the only players for Mac OS X are VLC (without metadata/title streaming) and Songbird.

Ahead Nero has released a free of charge command line HE-AAC encoder, and also support HE-AAC inside the Nero software suite.

The 3GPP consortium released source code of a reference HE-AACv2 encoder that appears to be quite competitive regarding quality <ref>http://www.mp3-tech.org/tests/aac_48/results.html</ref>. No community-supported Free Software encoder is available yet.

CD ripping

I recommend using Easy CD-DA Extractor, or winamp or DBpowerAMP or audiograbber.

Migration from Windows to Linux

Emails

Goal: transfer email from Outlook to thunderbird (windows) to thunderbird (linux)

  1. import feature of TB: Outlook to thunderbind (windows). ok, checked (see below)

Steps: from thunderbird (windows) to thunderbird (linux)

References:

Actions:

  • Copy profile TB (windows) to TB (linux). ok.

  1. check everything is copied, number of files and size. ok
  2. edit "/home/skyward/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile.default/prefs.js" file to show new directory path. Convert windows paths (with \\) to linux paths (using /). Make a backup. ok.
  3. edit "/home/skyward/.mozilla-thunderbird/profiles.ini" to make it use actual new profile. Make a backup. ok.
  4. chmod all files in profile directoy to 755 (read and execute). ok. Maybe 744 is enough.
  5. remove any lock file. ok
  6. start TB (linux) and go to Edit &gt; Account settings to check everything is configured correctly. ok. Check for each 'account &gt; server setting &gt; Local directory' shows the right path to where the profile is.
  7. place a signature file at an accessible place. ok
  8. Configure signature file in the account settings. ok
  9. Launch and close TB a few times to check everything works well. ok.
  10. Check the mailboxes, that the message are their, their number and attached documents.
  11. Delete or mark as "old" the ancient thunderbird profile under windows. Prevent from using it from now.
  12. Now on, you use only thunderbird under linux.
  13. It's finished !

Personnal experience: email transfer

Goal: transfer emails from Outlook to thunderbird. And eventually from thunderbird to Kmail under Linux.

Objects: Outlook, pst file, many emails, many email accounts (3, archive.pst, outlook.pst=main file, webmail.pst), firebird, import feature, result.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst 206 MB

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst 155 MB

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlookwebmail.unine.ch-00000004.pst 133 MB

Tasks:

  • Cleanup mailbox in Outlook, only keep what is important.
  • Import it in firebird.
    • Result:

In thunderbird: some accentued characters are corrupt. Webpages display better. Don't keep the feedline that were present in Outlook. Don't import the attached message from Outlook (.msg). Brouillons, message downloadés are kept.
IMAP Message (to be downlaoded): the message that were downloaded are kept.

Outlook: don't sort correctly after 'subject' (Re: messages are at wrong place).

  • Check:
    • the number of files : ok
    • the attachments :
      • ok (for regular attachments): 2 checked
      • no for attachment of emails, internal messages from Outlook(.msg)
      • ARCHIVE folder: ok, number of files, attachments. 2h
      • DOSSIER PERSONEL: ok, number of files, attachments. 20min
      • WEBMAIL: ok, downloaded message are kept and complete. 20min
  • delete old Outlook files

Transfer in Kmail

  • Convert email from Outlook to Kmail.
  • internal converter
  • use a special program. Find it on the net.
  • See in personal notes.

Note
The final PIM program used under Linux depends on the sync we want for the PocketPC. So I may use, in order of preference :

  1. Evolution
  2. Kmail
  3. Eventually thunderbird.

Since I don't know at this time wich one to use, I will do both.

Firefox profile transfer

Goal : to transfer firefox profile, from windows to linux, keeping bookmarks and installed extensions and theme.

Objects: profile, backup, copy, configuration file, paths, bookmarks, extensions, theme.
Time: 30 min.
Reference:

http://groups.google.com/group/Firefox-Users/browse_thread/thread/a85e568feba76f28

Method:

  • Backup profile under windows
  • copy to linux at right place
  • Edit configuration files to indicate right paths: prefs.js or user.js. Attention to use \ or /.
  • Launch the program and check in its configuration that everything is correct.
  • Check and eventually re-install extension and themes.

Actions:
Locate your profile folder

Before the configuration files are presented, you should know how to find your profile folder, which is where Firefox saves all your settings on your hard drive.

  • On Windows Vista/XP/2000, the path is usually %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows Vista, and the rest should be obvious.
    • On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default * On Linux, the path is usually ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/
    • On Mac OS X, the path is usually ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/

%AppData% is a shorthand for the Application Data path on Windows 2000/XP/Vista. To use it, click Start &gt; Run... (use the search box on Vista), enter %AppData% and press Enter. You will be taken to the "real" folder, which is normally C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data on Windows XP/2000, C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista.

Firefox is capable of handling more than one user and thus, more than one profile. The path examples above refers to the default profile that is automatically created when you start Firefox for the first time. You can manage any number of profiles by using the Profile Manager.

Edit configuration files

user.js (if it exists) and prefs.js - User Preferences. In most cases, migrating the "prefs.js" file from one profile to another is not recommended, especially if you had problems with the previous profile. If you choose to migrate "prefs.js", you may need to manually edit the paths to reflect the new profile location. You may also need to edit the file to remove preferences that refer to extensions that are not installed in the new profile.

My experience

  • Locate and copy profile (windows)

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

  • copy to new path (under linux)

~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/

  • Check that everything is copied correctly (number and total size of files). ok
  • Edit configuration file: pref.js, and change paths. ok.
  • Edit configuration file: ../profiles.ini and change paths. ok. indicate which profile to start.
  • Launch firefox application and check that is works correctly. ok, bookmarks are kept.
  • check extension and themes, and eventually re-install them. ok.

It detects if extensionsare compatible with current version (2.0.0.3), they are installed in the profile directory. ok, they are compatible. Cool I don't have to reinstall them. I run an upgrade of the extensions to have latest version.

  • Delete profile from firefox under windows.

Conclusion: ok.

Merge with other profile

In firefox, two different profiles contain information about bookmarks, but also installed extensions (add-on) and themes. Then it's much easier to only copy the bookmarks and not the rest of the directory, since the installed extensions are not the same and can make conflicts.

* Import bookmark.html file from old profile. Use the special function built into firefox: Bookmarks &gt; Organize (manage) bookmarks &gt; File &gt; Import...
And select the html file from old profile.

Conclusion: ok.

Transfer 30 articles from DokuWiki to Drupal

SOURCE
http://www.onenew.org/wiki/doku.php

DESTINATION
http://www.onenew.org/3/node/add/story

Ubuntu repositories and mirrors for Switzerland

Ubuntu Mirror list
=================================================
HELP:
---------------------------------------
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/CommandLine
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu

The official mirror list is available at:
---------------------------------------
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors?action=show&redirect=Archive

The mirror servers for Ubuntu are:
---------------------------------------
The default server at
archive.ubuntu.com

Such as:
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

ISO country extension redirects to the best server in this country, and occasionally simply to archive.ubuntu.com.
## Note that ccTLD.archive.ubuntu.com (e.g. us.archive.ubuntu.com) always exists for every ISO-3166 country code, as an alternative name for a mirror currently recommended for each country. Depending on conditions, sometimes this will be one of the mirrors below, and sometimes it will be the same as archive.ubuntu.com.

The mirror servers for Switzerland are:
---------------------------------------
http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/ubuntu/
ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/ubuntu/
http://mirror.zhdk.ch/ubuntu/
ftp://mirror.zhdk.ch/ubuntu/
rsync://mirror.zhdk.ch/ubuntu/

According to "https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors", the SWITCH mirror runs at 10 Gbps, which among the highest speed in the world.

Conclusion
---------------------------------------
The help document
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/CommandLine
is very usefull. We find all informations in it.
Basically we could use the server "http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/" for repositories which will redirect us to our country. It is even better to directly use the server in Switzerland. The best server in Switzerland is the Switch server at "ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/ubuntu/" because it is the fastest.
